To echo Jim-- it's not the numbers but the connections and what you get out of them, whether it's personal, business or both.

That you can track back to one email and how it changed things for you-- well, that's a great example of where connections lead.

Thanks for the link and the mention!

Hi Alexa - It's great to see you writing here again. If you keep churning out posts like this one... look out world!!

You bring up a lot of great points, but the one that I want to comment on is the value of every person you meet, whether they have one follower, 10,000 followers or don't even know what a follower is. People need to remember to be in the moment (I'm included here too). It always kills me to see a table full of people jamming away on their phones/Blackberries/iPhones. Look up, look around and get to know the folks that are right in front of you.

BTW... Here's a photo from that SMB last February (from Doug Haslam's blog)... check out who's right there in the front row!

As Jeff Pulver likes to say, "you never know, the next person you meet might change your life." Alexa's email definitely changed mine. No exaggeration.

I think Alexa hit on something fundamental with this post: that the real life connections are immeasurable and are where real, true value comes from.

I hope for humanity's sake that our obsession with ROI doesn't begin to make us see every interaction as a business transaction; that every handshake doesn't include a calling card.

I think we can all get complacent at times because of our hyper-connectedness and forget to reach out. To really reach out -- real time. Nothing will ever replace the wonderfulness of getting a cup of coffee with an old friend, or making a new friend over a plate of Pad Thai. I hope none of us ever forget that.

So, thanks Alexa for this post and thank you for your email at 12am one year ago.

Your best friend and roommate,
Maria
